Outside the mountain town of Palia, Maren Stone is drawn to a deep power in ruins of an ancient temple. That connection unlocks a blazing light magic within her that she can't control. That magic saves her from her first brush with the Soulreavers, a ruthless shadow cult, but it also marks her as their target.
The same day, Maren's oldest friend is pulled down his own path. Kaelen Shale is desperate for answers to the mystery of his brother's death. He will do anything to find them, even if it means leaving Maren behind. Their separate roads lead them to swear oaths to rival military orders just as they are swept into a hidden war.
The two friends are tested at Umbra's Reach, the coastal fortress of the Raven and Wolf Guard. The rival orders serve the King and Queen, one with stealth and the other with silver blades. With bonded wolves and ravens as allies, Maren and Kaelen discover the depth of their friendship and the costs that must be paid to survive.
